James Michel is a Lecturer as well as Academic and Critical Reading Curriculum Chair in the BMCC/CUNY Academic Literacy and Linguistics Department.

His research focus is college readiness, especially as it pertains to the literacy and critical thinking skills of first-generation, urban community college students.

Michel is a group member in BMCC's Gateway Initiative, which seeks to improve instruction of the college's 100- and 200-level courses. He is a participant in BMCC's Writing Across the Curriculum program, and is working to develop instructional strategies for including writing in courses across the disciplines. He is also involved in the Open Educational Resources initiative at BMCC, which creates access to free, open-source classroom materials for students in courses including his own critical thinking classes.
