Gay Brookes began teaching English in high school.  In the 1960s she joined the Peace Corps and was introduced to ESL teaching at a teacher training college in Malaysia.  Following her service, she trained Peace Corps  teachers both in the US and Ghana, Kenya, and Botswana.  She has taught ESL at BMCC for many years.  She studied promising practices in the teaching of writing to ESL students for her dissertation, leading to an Ed.D. in TESOL, Teachers College.  She has taught teachers in preparation at Teachers College and worked with teachers and faculty in a number of faculty development initiatives, from American Social History Project in high schools to CUNY and BMCC faculty members involved in ASAP and WAC.  She has been engaged in WAC faculty training since the 1990s and has worked to implement WAC at BMCC.  She is the co-author, with Jean Withrow, of 10 Steps (a low level ESL text with a long shelf life) and, with Jean Withrow and Martha Clark Cummings, of Changes and Inspired to Write.
